Take to the Skies: Flying Model Airplanes

It is an exhilarating feeling to fly your first model airplane. Although it may seem like a simple task, the most experienced pilots will tell you that knowledge of certain tactics are not only helpful but important. The following is a step-by-step guide to flying model airplanes.

Model Airplanes1. Choose your flying space wisely! For first time flight attempts, be sure to choose a large area that is wide open and not obstructed by trees or telephone poles.

2. For hand launching your airplane, throw it hard and straight ahead. Do not throw the plane straight up! For taking off from the ground, be sure to let the plane gather as much speed as possible before you signal “up.” Do not try to have the plane climb at a steep angle. A successful take-off depends on the angle, and an incorrect one may result in a stall or loss of airspeed.

3. Maneuver all turns only when the plane is very high off the ground. Wait for the airplane to steady itself before attempting any turns.

4. Avoid confusion about which way to turn your plane. This is easily achieved by flying the plane towards you and imagining what is the right and left of the plane. A big part of successfully flying model airplanes is getting a feel for the way that the plane moves!

5. Before landing your airplane, practice a few landings in the sky. Essentially, this means that you need to check how fast your airplane will fall out of the sky. If your plane stalls, signal “down” on your control and it will begin to fly again. This step is useful in getting a feel for how your plane will land.

6. During the landing procedure, allow your plane to smoothly glide onto the ground. You may find that it is difficult to aim for a specific landing spot, so choosing a large and unobstructed area for landing is preferable. Do not attempt any turns while landing as it is difficult for a model airplane to turn while at low altitudes.
